	Sicily map Click to enlarge			SICILY is situated south of the italian mainland and it is the largest island of the Mediterranean sea and a very popular destination famous for its beautiful coast lines and the beautiful nature. The island is surrounded by smaller islands and island groups, like the Liparian islands on the north eastern side, the Egadian on the western side and the Pelagian islands on the south western side. The landscape is changing with some flat land areas around Palermo and some mountain groups that are a continuation of the Appeninians. The climate is very mild and there are many citrus fruit cultivations like oranges, lemons and tangerines, but you can also find wine, grain, olive oil, almonds, nuts and liquorice. Sicily has a rich, tropical flora with palmtrees, banana trees, bamboo, papyrus and cotton. There are many attractions and cities that are worth visiting like the main city Palermo with one of the most preserved and enrichened archeological museums of Italy and many wonderful piazzas with different monuments and churches from the Middle Ages. You can also visit the greek temples in Agrigento, the birth place of St Lucia of Siracusa and archeological locations like Segesta, Selinunte and Piazza Armerina. Two of the most famous beach resorts are for example: Taormina – that is beautifully located at the foot of Etna on the east coast, and Cefalú- on the northern coast not far away from Palermo, Naxos and Gela. The smaller islands around Sicily are interesting destinations, like the paradise island Stromboli (known as the love island of Ingrid Bergman and the director Roberto Rossellini), to which regular ferries can take you. Here you will also find Etna - one of the most active vulcanos of the earth and the largest of Italy. Sicily also has many health resorts that perform most treatments.
