SESTRIERE
Skiing in both Italy and France- Alpine World Cup 1997

SESTRIERE- the second oldest ski area in the world, after the American Sun Valley, is situated in Val di Sole, Piemonte region, about 1 hour drive from Torino, and 2 hours from Milan, Geneva and Nice. In 1924 hotel Posseto opened on one of the peaks, and in 1930 the first Kandahar competition was held, ski pioneers from thw whole world came to participate. Shortly after this there where people building hotels, ski lifts and restaurants everywhere. Sestriere was starting to become an internationally famous ski village. Since then Sestriere has hosted many of the national and international ski competitions. Ingemar Stenmark and Alberto Tomba have enjoyed the slopes of Sestriere ( Alpine WorldCup 1997). At a height of 2035 m Sestriere and the other skiareas of Alta Valsusa (Sansicario, Sauze d’Oulx, Cesana and Clavier) offer you ca 400 km of pisted slopes, 118 slopes and over 100 lifts. The lift card is also including La Via Lattea (The Milky Way), that means that you can ski one day in the French villages Serre Chevalier, La Grave, Les 2 Alpes and Alpe d’Huez. From Pian del Sole it is easy to reach the neighbouring village Montgenèvre (France). At a skiing height between 1350-2823 m, and thanks to the over 900 artificial snow machines, Sestriere is a snow safe village. It is very practical and comfortable to stay here, you are always close to lifts and entertainment. You can choose between 30 different restaurants, pizzerias, several discotheques, piano bars, pubs and cafées. If you are tired of skiing you can go ice skating, horseback riding, or why don’t take an aerobic class?
